A smile is a beautiful thing—but sometimes wear and tear on our teeth can make us less than confident in our smiles. Whether it’s from the natural effects of aging or a childhood accident, teeth that are stained, chipped, or uneven can cause serious self-consciousness. Luckily, veneers are an easy way to improve how teeth look—putting a smile back on your face in no time.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are a layer of porcelain or composite resin that is placed over the facial surface of the teeth. Veneers are tooth-colored and made to look completely natural. The procedure is cosmetic, but veneers can also have dental health benefits apart from improving your teeth’s appearance.
Why Get Veneers?
Veneers can correct and improve a number of cosmetic issues, such as worn enamel that has become discolored or dull; chips and cracks from regular wear and tear; and unevenness due to grinding, aging, or accidents. Veneers can also correct abnormal spaces between teeth that widen with age. In addition to fixing cosmetic flaws, veneers have the benefit of providing extra support and structure to damaged teeth, which can prevent the need for more extensive treatment in the future.
If you and your dentist have decided that veneers are appropriate for you, the procedure can usually be accomplished in as few as three visits to the dentist. The first visit is diagnostic. The dentist will identify any oral health concerns to address, select a veneer tooth color, and often offer you a preview of results through imaging technology.
During your second visit, the dentist will prepare your teeth by reshaping them slightly, make an impression of the prepared teeth and fabricate beautiful, temporary veneers to be worn while the permanent restorations are being fabricated.
Permanent restorations are cemented during the third visit.
Care of Veneers
While veneers are strong and highly durable, some care must still be taken with them so they don’t crack or break. Avoiding certain hard or extremely sticky foods (such as taffy) is suggested, and it is often a good idea to wear protective mouth gear while sleeping.
